The EV supercar has officially arrived.
The all-electric Nio EP9 isn’t something entirely new. We’ve written about it several times since its reveal in London last year. We also figured this EV supercar would be ridiculously fast, considering it has 1,342 hp. But last Friday, literally out of nowhere, the Nio EP9 set a new Nurburgring lap record time of 6:45.9. Assuming this is true, and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t believe it, the Nio EP9 has officially beaten the previous ‘Ring lap record holder, the Lamborghini Huracan Performante.

Last year, the EP9 had a time of 7:05.12, which made it the fastest electric car to take on the ‘Ring. But things are different today. Nio claims the EP9 has a top speed of 194 mph and accelerates from 0-124 mph in 7.1 seconds. What’s the EP9’s secret sauce? Well, there are electric motors at each wheel that combine to generate that horsepower figure and 4,761 lb-ft of torque. Only a few weeks ago did Nio announce that it plans to build a second batch (seven have been made so far) of EP9s, priced at $1.48 million apiece. Each one, of course, will be made to order, but all utilize a carbon fiber tub that meets FIA standards.
For the moment, Nio has yet to release an official video of the EP9’s latest achievement, but we expect for that to come soon. The rise of the electric supercar has officially begun. This latest Nurburgring lap record may just turn out to be a real game changer for the industry at large.
