Some we’ll be happy to see go, others we will miss.
2016 is drawing to a close, and the end of the year will bring with it the end of several cars that we have come to know and sometimes love. Some of these models have been replaced or renamed, others were simply disasters that were not destined to live on. We did a similar list a few months ago, so if you don’t see a specific model here, like the Dodge Viper, it’s probably there. We were especially sad when we heard that the Viper would be killed off, but there are plenty of cars that we are happy to hear will not be around in 2017.
The BMW Z4 is definitely not one of them. The Z4 was BMW’s only two-seat sports car, but production has ended to make way for the upcoming Z5 which is being co-developed with Toyota. This new car should be a big improvement over the aging Z4. The Aston Martin DB9 is another model that we are sad to see go. However, we can console ourselves with its replacement, the DB11. It’s a major improvement over its predecessor, which has been around for 13 years. The final nine DB9 models were all given bespoke touches by the Q Division to make them even more special.
The Cadillac ELR was a colossal failure. The car was basically a gussied up Chevy Volt that cost $75,000. Only 1,024 were sold in all of 2015, and Cadillac quietly announced earlier this year that it would discontinue its odd EV. Another American luxury brand killing off one of its models is Lincoln, with the MKS due to die. The MKS is nothing more than a re-badged Ford Taurus. Surprisingly, the Taurus will survive to 2017 but the MKS will not. The car has already been replaced by the vastly superior Continental. Lincoln has already rolled out a Matthew McConaughey commercial for the luxury sedan and there will no doubt be many more to come.
Rolls-Royce will be ending production of the Phantom VII (the current generation) after 2016. The Phantom will return in 2018, but the Coupe and Drophead models will not make it to the next generation. We assume that the Wraith and Dawn have taken over the same space that the Phantom Coupe and Drophead once filled. Since Toyota completely killed off the Scion brand it is obvious that the TC will not be available in 2017. However, some models like the FR-S and iM will live on as Toyota-badged models. Unfortunately, the TC won’t enjoy a similar fate, so we’ll be waving goodbye after the 2016 model year.
Both the Chrysler Town And Country and Dodge Grand Caravan have been living on borrowed time. The Town and Country will be replaced by the new and much prettier Pacifica, while the Grand Caravan will go silently into the night with no apparent replacement. The Jeep Compass and Patriot are also two FCA models that will both change in 2017. The Compass has received a full redesign which finally makes it look like an SUV we’d be happy to recommend. The Patriot, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to have a replacement in the works and will be killed off after 2016.
The last two cars on the list come as a pair, the Hyundai Genesis and Equus. Both of these cars will technically live on under the new Genesis brand as the G80 and G90, respectively. Some people are still unaware that Hyundai has created a new luxury brand because it made the strange decision to name it after an existing model in its lineup. We don’t know why the automaker couldn’t come up with another clever name, but we doubt that many people will stop calling both cars Hyundais in 2017.
